Summary: Ben never talks about what happened to his ex-boyfriend, even with his best friend Will. Hiding behind alcohol glasses and one-night stands, will he one day have the courage to open up to someone, risking to be hurt again?..Why are you telling me all this? The café was really small and cozy. It was very late, almost midnight, so they were the only two visitors. They made an order, and a sleepy waiter brought them two hot coffees and some cake.
- It’s a really nice place, - said Ben, looking around. - And it’s so warm here. – He shivered at the thought of the wind that was now blowing outside, and took a sip of his coffee. – It kind of reminds me of London. Because… you know, it feels so out of New York’s tune.
Zac smiled.
- Yes, and it’s hidden behind a large restaurant, so few people come here. It’s usually quiet, and you don’t need to worry about fans that could recognize you. That’s why I love the place.
They sat silently for a minute, eating. Suddenly Zac’s phone started ringing. He looked at the screen and winced:
- Vanessa. – He turned off the phone and threw it on the table. Ben looked at him, uncertain.
- Maybe… you should answer her? She’s your girlfriend, after all. She must be worried?
Zac smirked.
- Look, do you really think that if she were my girlfriend I’d be sitting here with you?
Ben almost choked on his coffee. What was that supposed to mean?! Zac didn’t notice, as he was staring at his own cup, and sighed:
- I told you it’s complicated.
- I know. Look, you don’t need to talk about it if…
- No, I really want to make things clear, - Zac looked at him seriously. - It’s kind of… a contractual thing. We’re meant to act as a couple because we are one in the movie. The director thinks it makes young girls squeak with joy.
- I thought young girls like their idols single and available, - Ben giggled.
- Well, apparently, they like Vanessa so much that they don’t mind seeing us as a cute romantic couple. And… I think Vanessa is too much into that game. I’m afraid she’s in love with me. But she’s a nice friend - and that’s what makes things harder. I don’t want to hurt her.
Ben remained silent, not knowing what to answer. He felt like Zac was confessing to him, and he didn’t know how to react.
- Why are you telling me all this?
- Because I want to, - answered the other guy, looking him in the eye.
They stared at each other for so long that, Ben thought, one could probably see sparkles flowing across the table. It was almost impossible to look away; Zac broke the eye contact first, looking down and digging the fork into his cake.
- Well, sorry, it’s all about me, myself and I… What about you?
Ben sighed. He knew he needed to be honest, after everything he had heard from Zac.
- I broke up with someone.
- Oh… - The guy looked up. - I’m sorry.
- No, that’s okay, it was long ago. It’s just… it was the first time I really loved someone, - he kept looking at his cup, feeling rather awkward. He was suddenly curious how Zac felt talking about his personal life with a complete stranger. Probably it’s a common thing for Americans? He thought he really needed a cultural excursus.
- And he..? – Zac’s question broke his line of thought. He wanted to answer, but the pronoun Zac used stuck in his head. He. So Zac didn’t even question…
Ben stared at him in shock for a moment and then smiled softly, desperately trying not to blush:
- Is it… that obvious?
- Don’t I look like tea with 5 spoons of sugar? – The guy shone a brilliant smile at him, and then became serious again. – So… what happened?
- He was an asshole, that’s what happened, - Ben smirked, trying to be as ironic as possible. He returned to his cake instead, but couldn’t eat as he felt Zac’s eyes locked up on his, almost burning through his skin.
- What?! – He finally asked, trying not to sound very annoyed.
- It’s nothing. I just thought… You are like coffee. Black, two spoons of sugar. – It was Ben’s turn to look confused now, and Zac laughed quietly as he explained, - one for the skin and another for the smile.
…And as he drowned in those blue eyes of the other guy, and not even trying to calm down his heartbeat anymore, Ben thought – for the first time in a long time, - that it’s all going to be okay. Because this, today, right now and right here, in this little café, could be the start of something new.
With Zac.
